They were nice enough to send a mass card, and a small card sized photo, with what I think is a legit autograph but may be a preprint. Either way, that was very nice of them and our prayers are with him.

Well, it's finally happening. Manny Trillo is doing a signing. My Phillies photo will be completed on November 20,2010 thanks to our good friends at www.poppel.com who is hosting Manny and others at a show in Fairless Hills, PA at the Bucks County Tech High School. Thank you to everyone who emailed, posted msgs and texted me. First one to do so though was.... Dubs, Matt from Pa texted me late September 25th to share the good news. and.... Darrell Conner- You never heard of him? Me neither. Until Astrosfan5 from www.sportsgraphing.com sent me a msg telling me he had a unique gift for me. Anyway, according to the back of his card Darrell Conner "worked with Cole Hamels. Some teams backed away from Hamels when the lefty broke a bone in his upper arm as a high school sophomore, but Conner saw an ace with three plus pitches. After rounding up Xrays and sending them to the team doctors, Darrell submitted his recommendation. The Phillies nabbed Cole 17th overall in 2002 and, six years later, he became the hero of the team's World Championship." Three thoughts on this, #1 Thank you Astrosfan5 #2 we are now collecting team scout's autographs? #3 we now feel it is necessary to have team's scouts' autographs certified. A sign of the apocalypse if I ever seen one.

Awesome begining to Septemembers mailbag...
Matt Stairs - former Phillie signed ball , sent c/o Padres and added 08 WS Champs inscription as requested.

Anthony Gargano - known as "The Cuz" on Philly Sports Radio 610 WIP. He signed 2 of his books I sent him "The Great Philadelphia Fan Book" and "A Sunday Pilgrimage", two great reads for any Philly sports fan. It took over a year to get back which surprised me because on the radio he seems so down to Earth. But in the end, good ole Cuz comes through big time. He inscribed each book very nicely, wrote a note apologizing for the delay and giving me his personal email to keep in touch. But best of all he sent me an advanced unedited version of his newest book "NFL Unplugged", which is about the scenes behind the glitz and glamour of the NFL. It is set to be released September 27, and can be ordered in advance JUST CLICK HERE. I looked through it a bit and it looks awesome, I will give you a full review. Thank you Cuz!

Got a nice surprise from 1975 First Rounder Sam Welborn, who signed the ball witrh inscription. He also wrote a nice letter saying that his favorite teammate was Keith Moreland and once gave up a homerun to Dale Berra that is "still going now." Berra had 49 HRs in his 11 MLB seasons, so it must have been a real bad pitch.

I also got a response from the sister of Mike Martin, 1970 1rst pick. Horribly Mike was killed in a car accident 6 years ago coming back from an anniversary dinner with his wife (who survived). How tragic! I didn't know his brother is former Phillie Jerry Martin. Sad story, but it was very nice of her to respond. RIP

Today, I received a very nice autograph and ball from 1966 First Rounder Mike Biko. Mike was a first round pitcher out of Dallas (hopefully he's not a Cowboys fan) and suffered a knee injury. He made it as far as AAA after time in the Braves and Indians organization. He still lives in Texas and works in sales, and is a competitive tri-athlete. He also checked out my site and said his teenage boys were enjoying my request. Thanks Mike!

Trillo Update!

As you know, I have a 1980's photo signed by Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Ruben Amaro Sr., Larry Christenson, Keith Moreland, Larry Bowa, Dallas Green and Garry Maddox. It is a beautiful piece. The only guy I am missing is Manny Trillo. I have not seen Manny do any private signing but I recently spoke with a board member of sportsgrahping.com, who said he may be working on one. I have had 100% success with Trillo in the past for cards, cic's etc. But I need him on this photo. Looking back, I should have sent to him earlier but whatever.

Anyway, I found he is a "baserunning coordinator" for the Whitesox. About 3 weeks ago, I wrote a letter c/o ChiSox asking him if I sent a donation to Whitesox Charities, would he sign my photo. I explained to him what the photo is, how it is signed by everyone and how valuable it is to me. I told him that I'd be nervous sending it to him in regular mail and would do it priority with delivery confirmation etc., and didn't want it just mixed up with the rest of his mail. So at the bottom I asked 2 questions and made yes/no boxes. They were (1) if i sent would you sign it? he checked yes (2) Is there a different address I could send it to so it doesn't get lost - he didn't check either box for that question. The envelope came postmarked Orlando FL. I was unable to find a Whitesox minor league team in the Orlando area or an address for him there. He also sent me a signed card.

SO:
(1) do I send to Chicago priority with confirmation and hope they get it to him in Orlando?
(2) hope that the private signing work out?
(3) other suggestions?

I really don't want to lose this photo, really want to complete it and really don't know if this signing will ever take place.

What do you think? Im interested in your feedback.

Roy Thomas 1971 1rst rd pick - inscribed- he also wrote "Mike who?" It took me a while to figure out why he wrote it, and then it dawned on me. I mentioned in my letter how he was the 1rst round pick and Mike Schmidt was the 2nd for the Phils that year. Now I got it... duh

on the negative side I got a wrong address for Mike Martin 1970 and Jeff Kraus 1976. Back to the research lab on them.

PROJECT DRAFT PICK UPDATE

In my full OCD mode, the years 1979, 1987, 2003 and 2005 were not sitting well with me. Those were the years that the Phillies did not have a first round draft pick. So me (being me) had to take it a step further and turned it into a "first pick" project, rather than a "first round" project. This adds Kyle Money (1979) , Matt Rambo (1987) , Tim Moss (2003) and Mike Costanzo (2005) to the mix. Surprisingly I was able to locate all of their addresses online through some public info searches without too much of an effort. They went out today. I am still awaiting address confirmations on 3. If those 3 respond, it will bring the total sent at 36. Should be fun to see the results, but I'm going to have to order some ball cubes by the case load.

PROJECT DRAFT PICK

What is this crap? . Well it is 28 out of 32 missions for PROJECT DRAFT PICK. A few weeks ago Tommy and I were discussing last years #1 pick Kelly Dugan. The issue of the Phillies having a bad history in their draft picks eventually surfaced. I took a look at our first round picks and came up with the idea of try to get an inscribed ball from everyone of them. A few I already had like Hamels, Drabek, Savery and others. After taking a look at the list and sorting out guys I have no chance with (JD Drew and others), I was left with 32 names. I have been able to locate addresses on all of them, except there are 4 guys who I sent letters to trying to confirm that address, that I'm waiting for a response from. Of the 32 I am sending to (if the 4 other address are confirmed), here are some interesting facts: (1) 3 are still playing Greg Golson, Reggie Taylor and Gavin Flyod (2) 10 never played a day in the majors (ie: Jack Jackson, Chad McDonell). (3) 2 are managers - John Russell with the Pirates and Trey McCall at Emory and Henry College. (4) from 1965-1996 the best player by far is Greg Luzinski, with a distant second to Mike Libierthal and third to Lonnie Smith. (5) 6 played in the majors but never for the Phillies such as Roy Thomas, Pete Smith and Johnny Abrego. (6) Phillies scouting was not to bad in the 90's taking Brett Myers, Cole Hamel, Pat Burrell and Chase Utley with #1 picks , all huge pieces of the 2008 team. (7) 5 were members of the 1980 team Luzinski, Larry Christenson, Scott Munninghoff, Lonnie Smith and Mike Anderson.(8) 3 were on the 1993 team Ricky Jordan, Brad Brink and Tyler Green

So anyway, 28 went out today. I'm still awaiting to confirm 4 addresses, but hopefully they will go out soon. My bet is that I well get at least one reply within 10 days and I will create a column on the side to track my results.
